How to Buy Tokens on the XRP Ledger
XRP Ledger tokens trade on the ledger’s own exchange. You buy one by swapping XRP for it from your own wallet: a wallet, some XRP, one swap.
1. Get a wallet
Press Connect at the top of xrpl.to to create a wallet in your browser or import one you already have, or connect a Ledger. The XRP wallet guide compares the options.
2. Add XRP
Buy XRP on any exchange that lists it and withdraw it to your wallet’s address. The ledger keeps 1 XRP in every account and 0.2 XRP more for each token it holds, so send a little more than you plan to spend (xrpl.org: Reserves). For a first token bought with 100 XRP:
- 100 XRP to spend on the token
- 0.4 XRP xrpl.to’s 0.4% fee
- 1 XRP kept to keep the account open
- 0.2 XRP kept for the token’s trust line
3. Check the token
Anyone can issue a token on the XRP Ledger, under any name. Before you buy, look at the token’s page on xrpl.to:
- the issuer address, because many tokens share a name;
- how many wallets hold it, and how much the largest holders own;
- how much XRP sits in its liquidity pool, which is what you can sell back into;
- whether the issuer can still create more;
- a red scam warning, which xrpl.to shows on tokens it has flagged.
The token safety guide explains each check.
4. Swap XRP for it
Open the token’s page or the swap, enter how much XRP to spend, and confirm. xrpl.to quotes the price across the ledger’s order books and liquidity pools, and the trade settles in the next ledger, 3 to 5 seconds later (xrpl.org).
xrpl.to charges 0.4% of the XRP side of the swap, and nothing on a swap between two tokens (fees). The network fee is 0.000012 XRP, and the ledger destroys it rather than paying it to anyone (xrpl.org: Transaction cost). When the trade passes through a liquidity pool, that pool takes its own trading fee, set by its liquidity providers between 0% and 1% (xrpl.org: Automated market makers).
The swap also adds the token’s trust line: the ledger’s permission for your account to hold that token, with rippling turned off (xrpl.org: Trust line tokens). To sell, switch the panel to Sell.

Questions
How much XRP do I need to buy an XRPL token?
The amount you want to spend, plus 1 XRP that the ledger keeps in every account and 0.2 XRP for each token you hold.
Do I need an account or ID to buy XRPL tokens?
Not on the XRP Ledger’s own exchange: you swap from your own wallet, and xrpl.to needs no account. The exchange where you first buy XRP may ask for ID.
What is a trust line?
The ledger’s permission for your account to hold a token. Each one keeps 0.2 XRP in reserve, returned when you remove the line. xrpl.to’s swap adds it for you.
What does a swap cost?
xrpl.to charges 0.4% of the XRP side of a swap, and nothing on a swap between two tokens. The network fee is 0.000012 XRP, and a liquidity pool on the route takes its own trading fee of 0% to 1%.
How do I sell an XRPL token?
Open the token’s page, switch the swap panel to Sell and swap the token back to XRP.
