Solana vs XRPL: DEX Volume, dApps & On-Chain Activity Compared
A data-driven comparison of two fundamentally different blockchains. Solana dominates raw DEX volume with its memecoin ecosystem, while XRPL operates a native orderbook DEX and protocol-level AMM with minimal fees that are burned. All numbers auto-update hourly.
7-Day DEX Volume
Solana's 7-day DEX volume of $14.03B dwarfs XRPL's $35.81M - a 392x difference. Both figures are DefiLlama’s, so the methodology matches, and its XRPL adapter undercounts: in the last 24 hours alone the XRP Ledger’s exchange traded 4.14M XRP ($5.43M) by our index. The $4.84M (3.69M XRP) shown in the app breakdown below is only the SourceTag-attributed slice routed through dApps - the rest hits the order book and AMMs directly. Context still matters: much of Solana’s figure is memecoin trading. In the last three months of 2024, pump.fun-related trades were 40–67.4% of all Solana DEX transactions (Mancino, arXiv 2512.11850).
Solana's 24-hour volume alone ($1.57B) exceeds XRPL's entire 7-day volume, reflecting the explosive but volatile nature of memecoin speculation.
Total Value Locked (TVL)
Solana's DeFi TVL of $5.90B reflects a mature ecosystem of lending protocols, liquid staking, and AMM pools. XRPL's $39.38M TVL as measured by DefiLlama only captures AMM liquidity pools - it doesn't account for the native DEX orderbook depth or XRP held in escrow and payment channels.
dApp Ecosystem
Solana tracks 136 DEX protocols on DefiLlama, of which 89 were active in the last 24 hours. XRPL has 24 named dApps tracked via SourceTag analytics (18.0K distinct tags seen in 7d) - a unique on-ledger attribution system where each dApp tags transactions with a numeric identifier, enabling precise platform-level analytics without relying on contract addresses.
DefiLlama only tracks 2 XRPL protocols, significantly undercounting the actual ecosystem. XRPL.to's SourceTag tracking names 24 dApps including Xaman, Magnetic, First Ledger, XPMarket, Bidds, and more.

Cost of Storage: What Each Chain Charges to Keep Data
Volume is one comparison; the other is what it costs to keep something on each chain. Solana’s deposit grows with an account’s size in bytes (solana.com). XRPL’s reserve is the same for every item, whatever its size (xrpl.org). A trust line and a Solana token account do the same job — the record saying “this wallet can hold this token” — so they compare directly. The XRP Ledger figures below are averages over 120,000 trust lines and 200,000 accounts; Solana's come from its token program.
| Measure | Solana | XRP Ledger | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost to hold one account | $0.09 | $1.31 | XRPL is 13.9× more expensive |
| Token-holding records | 612M | 6.91M | Solana has 89× as many |
| Share holding nothing | 53.3% | 39.0% | people abandon positions on both |
| Records per account | 7.20 | 0.85 | a Solana wallet carries 8.5× as many |
| Wasted space in those records | 53.8 GB | 0.95 GB | 57× more storage doing nothing |
The surprise is where the difference actually comes from. People abandon token positions at roughly the same rate on both chains — 53% of Solana token accounts hold nothing, against 39% of XRPL trust lines. Charging more does not make anyone tidier. What changes is how many records each person creates in the first place: 7.2 per Solana wallet against 0.85 per XRPL wallet. At 0.2 XRP you open one when you mean to hold something; at $0.22 you open them without thinking, and on Solana someone else can even open one for you (solana.com) — which XRPL does not allow at all: “you cannot cause someone else to hold a token they don’t want” (xrpl.org).
The result is 0.95 GB of abandoned token records on XRPL against 53.8 GB on Solana. XRPL is not spotless either — 16.6% of its accounts are empty and 5.1% have never sent a transaction — it is simply far smaller. A fuller treatment of how each chain prices storage, and what it costs validators, is in Priced by the Byte.
Architectural Differences
The volume gap between Solana and XRPL reflects fundamentally different design philosophies, not just ecosystem maturity.
- Smart contract-based DEXs (AMM pools)
- 200 ms slots since 9 October 2026, down from 400 ms (solana.com)
- Base fee 5,000 lamports a signature ($0.00053), plus optional priority fees (solana.com)
- Memecoin launchpads drive volume
- Programs deployed by anyone
- Native orderbook DEX + protocol-level AMM (XLS-30d)
- Settles in 3-5 s (xrpl.org); validators agree without mining or staking (consensus)
- Transaction fees ~0.00001 XRP, destroyed rather than paid to validators (xrpl.org)
- AMM trading fee 0-1%, set by liquidity-provider vote and paid into the pool (xrpl.org)
- Auto-bridging through XRP for cross-currency trades (xrpl.org)
- SourceTag attribution per transaction
- A ledger orders its transactions by a salted hash of each sender, not by fee, so a higher fee cannot buy an earlier position (rippled)
XRPL's native DEX means every token trade settles at the protocol level - there is no exchange contract between the trader and the ledger, and no fee auction for position. The built-in AMM (XLS-30d amendment, live since 22 March 2024, xrpl.org) allows liquidity providers to earn trading fees (0-1%, set by LP vote) without deploying any code. Transaction fees (~0.00001 XRP) are destroyed, not paid to validators. The trade-off is lower composability and smaller developer mindshare compared to Solana's programmable ecosystem.
Solana's volume is heavily concentrated in memecoin trading. PumpSwap alone generates $2.84B in 7-day volume - more than XRPL’s entire ecosystem.
Open Ledger vs dApp-Attributed Volume
XRPL's total on-chain DEX volume is $35.81M (7d, per DefiLlama). Of that, $4.84M (13.5%) is attributed to 24 dApp platforms via SourceTag tracking. The remaining $30.97M is "open ledger" volume: trades placed directly on the native DEX orderbook without any dApp intermediary.
This split is unique to XRPL. Because the DEX is protocol-native, anyone can submit OfferCreate or AMMDeposit transactions directly - no frontend or dApp required. This open ledger volume includes direct API traders, arbitrage bots, market makers, and users interacting with the ledger through wallets that write no SourceTag.
On Solana, all DEX volume must flow through a deployed program (smart contract), so aggregators like DefiLlama can attribute 100% of volume to specific protocols. On XRPL, DefiLlama only tracks 2 protocols and misses SourceTag-level granularity -it cannot distinguish between the 24 dApps that XRPL.to tracks.
SourceTag: Native dApp Attribution
SourceTag is a native XRPL transaction field where dApps embed a numeric identifier (e.g., Magnetic uses 10011010, First Ledger uses 74920348, XRPL.to uses 161803). This allows attribution of a trade to the platform that sent it, without relying on contract addresses.
XRPL.to names 24 dApps across DEXs, NFT marketplaces, wallets, bridges, launchpads, and bots; DefiLlama’s view has 2 XRPL protocols.

Solana recorded $410.2K in NFT volume across 2.4K sales in the past 7 days. Note: Solana data covers Magic Eden verified collections only -actual total volume including Tensor and other marketplaces is higher. The XRP Ledger recorded 1.9K sales for $224.3K across every marketplace, to 746 buyers. The key architectural difference: Solana NFTs require deploying Metaplex programs and rely on marketplace smart contracts, while XRPL NFTs are a native ledger object type (XLS-20) with minting, offers, and transfers handled at the protocol level - no smart contracts needed.
