The ten largest XRP accounts hold 10.9% of all XRP, and the hundred largest 31.3%. It takes 41,912 XRP to be in the top 1% of 8.5 million accounts, and the median account holds 19 XRP. Another 31.7 billion XRP is locked in Ripple’s escrow and belongs to no account at all.
The ten largest XRP accounts
Most of the largest accounts belong to exchanges, which hold their customers’ XRP together in a few big wallets. 10 of the ten carry a known name; an unnamed account is one whose owner has not been publicly identified.

How concentrated XRP is
The hundred largest accounts hold 31.3% of all XRP. In January 2013, when the ledger had 317 accounts, they held 99.5%.
Ripple’s escrow
In December 2017 Ripple locked 55 billion XRP in escrow on the XRP Ledger. In its own words, it set up “55 contracts of 1 billion XRP each that will expire on the first day of every month”, and “whatever is unused at the end of each month” goes “to the back of the escrow rotation” (Ripple). An escrow is a ledger object that holds XRP until a set time; nobody can spend it before then (xrpl.org).
By Ripple’s weekly figures, the escrow held 52.3 billion XRP on 6 January 2019 and 31.7 billion on 27 September 2026. Over the same years the distributed supply grew from 41.1 billion to 63.1 billion XRP.
Escrowed XRP is not in any account, so it never appears in a rich list. The total in existence is 99.99 billion XRP rather than 100 billion because every transaction destroys a small fee: “the XRP is irrevocably destroyed” (xrpl.org: Transaction cost).
