XRPL Account Reserve & Activation Cost Explained

Every XRP Ledger account keeps part of its XRP locked: 1 XRP for existing, plus 0.2 XRP for each thing it owns on the ledger. The XRP stays yours and comes back when the thing is removed. How much is locked for you, and how to free it.

1 XRP
base reserve: to activate and keep an account
0.2 XRP
owner reserve: for each object the account owns

Today’s reserves, read from the ledger every hour. Everything above the reserve is yours to spend.

What counts as an object

  • A trust line for each token you hold. Your first two can be opened with just the base reserve (xrpl.org).
  • An open order on the exchange, and each NFT buy or sell offer.
  • A page of NFTs: NFTs are kept in pages of up to 32, and each page counts once.
  • Escrows, checks, payment channels, tickets, a signer list, and other entries your account creates.

The reserve exists so that each entry kept on every server in the network is paid for by whoever keeps it (why reserves exist).

How to free it

  • Remove trust lines you no longer use: sell or send the whole balance first (how).
  • Cancel orders and NFT offers you no longer want; expired ones still count until removed.
  • Finish or cancel escrows and checks, and close payment channels.
  • Delete the account to recover all but 0.2 XRP of the base reserve (xrpl.org).

Questions

How much XRP do I need to activate a wallet?
1 XRP. An address exists on the ledger only once it receives at least the base reserve; until then it cannot send anything or hold tokens.
Can I get the base reserve back?
Only by deleting the account. The deletion costs at least one owner reserve (0.2 XRP), which is destroyed, and the rest of the balance goes to an address you choose. The account must be empty of objects first.
Can the reserve change?
Yes. Validators vote on it, and a change applies to every account at once. It has been lowered three times since it was first recorded in April 2013, most recently on 2 December 2024.
Why is my spendable balance lower than my balance?
Because the reserve is part of the balance: 1 XRP for the account plus 0.2 XRP for each object it owns. On xrpl.to, your address page shows the spendable amount and how much is reserved.
