XRPL DEX Trading Guide
The XRP Ledger has an exchange built in: order books and AMM pools that any wallet can trade against directly. Your XRP and tokens stay in your own account until the moment a trade fills. What you need, and how each kind of order works on xrpl.to.
What you need
- A wallet you control (choosing one); xrpl.to can create one in the browser.
- XRP: 1 XRP that the account must keep, 0.2 XRP held for each token you hold, plus whatever you want to trade.
Market orders: swap now
On a token’s page or the Swap page, choose the amount and confirm. The quote takes the best price across the order books and AMM pools, and the slippage you set caps how far the price may move before the trade is refused rather than filled worse. The first buy of a token opens its trust line in the same step (trust lines).
Limit orders: name your price
The trade panel’s Limit tab places an order at your price. If it can fill straight away it does; the rest waits on the ledger’s order book, holding 0.2 XRP in reserve, until someone takes it or you cancel it (limit orders guide).
What it costs
- Network fee: about 0.000012 XRP a transaction, destroyed.
- xrpl.to: 0.4% of the XRP a trade moves when it fills through the trade panel; a token-to-token swap, and an order that fills later on the book, pay none.
- The pool: each AMM pool charges its own trading fee, up to 1%, paid to its liquidity providers (every fee explained).
What the token page shows
- The chart, with volume, in several time frames.
- Pool and order book: how much can be bought or sold near the current price.
- Holders: how many wallets hold it, and how much the largest ones have.
- Trades: every fill, as it happens.
Before buying a token, check who issued it and what that issuer can still do (token safety guide), and start with an amount you can afford to lose.
Questions
- Do I need an exchange account to trade on the XRP Ledger?
- No. You trade from your own XRP Ledger wallet, and every order is a transaction you sign. Nobody holds your funds in between.
- What does a trade cost?
- About 0.000012 XRP in network fee, destroyed. A trade through xrpl.to’s panel that moves XRP also pays xrpl.to 0.4% of that XRP. Each open order holds 0.2 XRP in reserve until it fills or you cancel it.
- Market or limit order?
- A market order trades now at the best price available, up to the slippage you allow. A limit order names your price and waits on the book until someone takes it or you cancel it.
