What Is XRPL Crypto?

XRPL stands for XRP Ledger — a public blockchain that launched in 2012. It’s designed to settle payments and trade assets in seconds, with fees measured in fractions of a cent.

The Short Answer

XRPL is an open, decentralized blockchain. Anyone can send XRP, issue tokens, trade on its built-in DEX, provide AMM liquidity, or mint NFTs without deploying a smart contract. The protocol handles all of that natively. Transactions finalize in 3–5 seconds and cost around 0.00001 XRP (fractions of a cent at typical prices).

XRP is the native asset of the ledger, similar to how ETH is the native asset of Ethereum. The network is called the XRP Ledger (XRPL). People often use the terms interchangeably, but they mean different things — see XRPL vs XRP.

What Makes XRPL Different

  • Native DEX. The order book and AMM are part of the protocol. No deployed contract, no router, and no way to buy transaction position.
  • Native tokens. Any account can issue a token via a simple transaction — no ERC-20 bytecode required.
  • Consensus instead of mining. A federated consensus algorithm finalizes ledgers every 3–5 seconds. No proof-of-work, so it uses a tiny fraction of the energy mining does.
  • Low fees. The minimum is 10 drops (0.00001 XRP); it rises only while the network is busy, and nobody can bid for a place in line.
  • Built-in NFTs, escrows, payment channels, multisig, and AMMs. All as first-class transaction types.

How It Works (High Level)

The XRPL is maintained by independent validators running rippled software. Every 3–5 seconds they agree on a set of transactions and produce a new ledger version. No mining, no gas auction. A transaction is finalized as soon as the ledger it’s included in is validated.

To hold an issued token (USD, RLUSD, SOLO, any meme coin) your account needs a trustline to the issuer. It is how an account opts in to holding a token, and it holds 0.2 XRP of your balance in reserve until you remove the line.

What You Can Do With It

  • Swap tokens on the native DEX; the ledger charges no trading fee on its order books (pools and apps may).
  • Earn yield by providing liquidity to AMM pools.
  • Launch a token — memes, stablecoins, utility tokens — without writing Solidity.
  • Buy and sell NFTs through offers on the ledger; marketplaces add their own fee, a direct sale between two accounts has none.
  • Send cross-currency payments that route through AMMs and order books atomically.

Is XRPL the Same as Ripple?

No. Ripple is a company (Ripple Labs) that contributes heavily to XRPL development, runs validators, and holds a large escrow of XRP. The ledger itself is open-source and permissionless — it would continue running if Ripple the company disappeared tomorrow. The validator set is distributed across exchanges, universities, and independent operators.

Where to Start

Grab a wallet (see best XRP wallets), fund it with a small amount of XRP to cover the activation reserve (1 XRP) plus fees, then explore the DEX directly on xrpl.to. No signups, no KYC for the ledger itself.
