How to Mint NFTs on the XRP Ledger
An NFT on the XRP Ledger is created by one transaction, NFTokenMint, with no contract to deploy. What it costs, the settings you choose once and for good, and the decision that matters most: where the art lives.
What you need
- A funded account: 1 XRP to exist, plus 0.2 XRP for each page of up to 32 NFTs it will hold.
- The art and its metadata (name, description, traits) stored somewhere that will last.
- A link to that metadata, up to 256 bytes, which goes into the NFT (NFTokenMint).
Settings fixed at mint
| Royalty (TransferFee) | A share of every sale paid to you, from 0 to 50%. |
| Transferable | Off, the NFT can only go back to you: a badge or ticket that cannot be resold. |
| Burnable | On, you as the issuer can destroy it later, wherever it is. |
| XRP only | On, it can only be sold for XRP, never for a token. |
| Mutable | On, you can change its link later; holders then trust you not to swap the art. |
| Taxon | A number that groups NFTs into a collection. |
Where the art should live
The NFT holds only a link. If the link points at an ordinary web server, whoever runs it can change or remove the art; a content address such as an IPFS link (ipfs://…) cannot be changed, as long as someone keeps the file available. What creators on the XRP Ledger actually use, and what goes wrong: minting an NFT that keeps its art.
Try it first on Testnet
The xrpl.to Testnet sandbox gives you free Testnet XRP and a ready-made NFTokenMint to sign in the browser, so you can see the result before spending real XRP. For code, xrpl.org has a step-by-step tutorial (mint and burn NFTs).
After minting
The NFT appears on the ledger, and on xrpl.to, as soon as its transaction is validated. To sell it, create a sell offer, or accept a buy offer someone makes; a marketplace can also match the two as a broker (buying and selling NFTs).
Questions
- How much does it cost to mint an NFT on the XRP Ledger?
- About 0.000012 XRP in network fee per NFT. Your account also holds 0.2 XRP in reserve for each page of up to 32 NFTs it owns, freed when the NFTs leave it.
- Are XRP Ledger royalties enforced?
- On every sale made through the ledger’s NFT offers, yes: the ledger pays the creator’s share out of the price. A transfer at no price pays nothing, so a sale arranged outside the ledger can avoid it.
- Can I change an NFT after minting?
- Only its link, and only if it was minted as mutable. The royalty, the transferable, burnable and XRP-only settings, and the taxon are fixed for good.
